CUFA Delivered a Toilet, Demands to Fix Sewer Backup Program, to County Commissioners

Cincinnati, Ohio - Today Communities United For Action (CUFA) delivered a toilet to the Hamilton County Commissioners with the demand, “Don’t Flush our Neighborhoods Down the Drain; Fix the Sewer Backup Program Now.”

CUFA has long raised concerns about the inequitable administration of the Metropolitan Sewer District’s (MSD) Sewer Backup Response (SBU) and Prevention Programs (SBUPP).  Today CUFA is calling on the Hamilton County Commissioners to do a compliance review of both programs to ensure the programs are following the law under the Global Consent Decree to help victims of sewer backups in all communities.

CUFA is demanding that the Hamilton County Commissioners perform a compliance review in order to:

  • Honor their agreement to eliminate the requirement for victims to call within 24 hours.  Despite the County and City’s commitment to suspend this rule, recent sewer backup victims were told they must call MSD within 24 hours of the sewer of the sewer backup;
  • Require MSD to assist sewer backup victims even when overland flooding is also present; and
  • Provide oversight for the programs they fund.

CUFA members held the car rally and delivered a “Sewer Justice” Petition to highlight these demands.
